Homemade Refried Beans

You’ll never want to eat canned refried beans again after you have this recipe.

I am so excited to finally share this recipe and add it to my recipe vault of sorts! We eat refried beans frequently and our preferred brand changed up their recipe and the beans were not good. So we tried multiple others and could not find one (until recently after 3 years of hunting). This is what led me to finding a homemade version that we would like. These are hands-down the very best refried beans I’ve ever had. If I try canned beans, I’ll often add cumin, chili powder, and lime juice into it because it’s just not the same now that I’ve had this recipe!

What you need:

  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, divided

  • 1 small white onion, diced

  • 4 cloves minced garlic

  • 2 cans (15 oz. each) pinto beans, rinsed and drained

  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth

  • 1/2 tsp. tsp. chili powder

  • 1/2 tsp. chipotle chili powder

  • 1 tsp. cumin

  • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano

  • 1 Tbsp. lime juice

  • Salt and pepper

  • Optional garnishes: chopped cilantro, crumbled cotija or shredded cheese, diced tomato, diced/sliced jalapeno

Directions:

  1. In a large saucepan, melt 1 Tbsp. butter over medium-high heat.

  2. Once melted, add onion and saute for 5 minutes until softened, stirring occasionally.

  3. Add garlic and saute for 1 to 2 more minutes until cooked and fragrant, stirring occasionally.

  4. Add pinto beans, veggie broth, chili powders, cumin, and oregano. Stir until it reaches a simmer.

  5. Remove from heat and use a potato masher or wooden spoon to mash the beans (if you want the super smooth you can use a blender or food processor).

  6. Stir in remaining 1 Tbsp. butter until melted and well combined. Season with salt and pepper and add lime juice.

  7. Serve garnished with desired toppings.
