Steak ‘n Shake Frisco Patty Melts
A double stacked patty melt complete with Frisco sauce makes for a brilliant copycat!
Fun fact: 2018 was the year I first tried Steak 'n Shake. It's not an absolute favorite or anything, but I definitely enjoy the atmosphere and they make pretty good burgers (and shakes). However, I definitely think the Frisco patty melt is a winner. In fact, Matthew got a Frisco Melt just mere days before I made this copycat for the first time, instead of going for something different. He was so happy to have it twice in a week because he enjoyed it that much. I can't say I blame him. The only thing that was different in my making of it was that I subbed the Swiss cheese for mozzarella because I'm not a big fan of Swiss cheese - and I don't think Nick is either. Not sure on the kids' feelings about it. I still have not had an authentic Frisco patty melt, but Matthew says it's really close, so I'll take his word for it!
What you need:
For the Frisco sauce:
1/2 cup thousand island dressing
1/2 cup French dressing
2 Tbsp. ketchup
1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
For the burgers:
1 lb. ground chuck (per 4 patties - enough for 2 people)
Salt and pepper to taste
Onion powder
Garlic powder
Sourdough bread
Unsalted butter, at room temperature
Sliced American cheese
Sliced mozzarella cheese
Directions:
For the Frisco sauce: mix all ingredients together and chill in refrigerator.
For the burgers: Form ground beef into 4 balls.
Place on a griddle set at 375 degrees or a cast iron skillet set on medium-high heat.
Using a spatula, press balls into thin patties, then immediately season with salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder.
Flip when edges begin to brown and season on the other side. Then place a piece of American cheese on two of the patties and a piece of mozzarella cheese on two patties.
Meanwhile, spread butter on one side of each piece of bread and toast in a nonstick pan.
Once burgers are done cooking, build your burgers by spreading Frisco sauce on each piece of bread, topping with a mozzarella-topped burger, then an American-topped burger, followed by another piece of bread.
