Cincinnati Chili

This famous Ohio chili goes back to the 1920s and is super unique!

This one is slightly different from the Skyline Chili Copycat I posted before - this one is my mother-in-law's recipe for it :) I'd have to have my husband home to tell me which one is closer to actual Skyline.

What you need:

  • 2 lb. ground beef

  • 2 cups chopped onion

  • 4 cups water

  • 2 cans (8 oz each) tomato sauce

  • 1/2 tsp. allspice

  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder

  • 4 Tbsp. chili powder

  • 1 tsp. cumin

  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper

  • 1/4 tsp. cloves

  • 2 3/4 Tbsp. cocoa

  • 2 Tbsp. white vinegar

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 tsp. cinnamon

  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt

  • 4 drops Tabasco

Directions:

  1. In a large pot, add ground beef and onions. Add water, 1 cup at a time, stirring to break up the ground beef.

  2. Bring to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to keep beef finely crumbled.

  3. Add tomato sauce, spices, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar and Tabasco.

  4. Simmer, uncovered, for 2 to 3 hours until thickened.

  5. Serve on spaghetti or hot dogs. Topped with finely shredded cheddar cheese, diced onion, and/or kidney beans with oyster crackers on the side.

  6. TO MAKE IN THE CROCKPOT: Place ground beef, diced onion, and 2 cups water (4 cups is too much water for the crockpot) into the crockpot. Crumble beef until no large pieces are left. Add the remainder of the ingredients. Cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours. Serve over top of cooked spaghetti with shredded cheese and diced onion.
